MOT Type 1 Hardcore
MOT Type One or MOT Type 1 Hardcore is a granular sub base usually made up from limestone. The size of MOT hardcore ranges between 0-40mm, which allows for tight compacting as being a hard stone with dust, it ensures a strong, level hard standing suitable for roads & highways, footpath, bridleways, carparks or preparing areas for paving or creating hard standing areas.
Due to being a locally sourced, natural product, the colour, size and texture may vary dependent on the area of the quarry.
It is often worth investing a good strong sub layer before any finishing materials are laid on top. Often, issues can arise with not having a proper sub base in place such as the soil underneath the finishing layer not spreading the load correctly.
A densely compacted sub layer will ensure any loads such as cars or larger vehicles weight will be spread across the area which helps to reduce distortion of any material above.
The bedding layer and sub base should be a consistent thickness across the area to avoid differential settlement.
Please note that the calculator above is an estimate, due to the products being locally sourced and natural – quantities required can differ due to some quarries producing stone softer or harder than the next, once compacted the results can vary a lot.
MOT Type 1 as a sub base should not be laid thicker than 150mm – if a depth deeper than 150mm is required, it should be laid in stages, laying the first 150mm stage, compacting accordingly with a whacker plate, and then the next stage on top.
