Sharp Sand / Grit Sand
This Sand is also known as Grit Sand, River Sand, Coarse Sand or Concreting Sand.
Sharp Sand is approximately 0-4mm in size which makes it useful in applications where building sand doesn’t measure up due to a larger grain size.
It is suitable for general building use, it is most suitable for applications such as bedding paving slabs and block paving on.
Ideally you would lay this sand on top of a solid sub base such as MOT Type 1 Hardcore – to set up your patio before laying any flags, firstly remove between 150-170mm of top soil – rake it over and then tamper down or whacker plate any loose soil down to create a solid soil base. Add any concrete edgings as preferred – then lay approx 100mm of MOT Type 1 Hardcore, compacted in 2 layers of 50mm. Then lay approx 30-40mm of Sharp Sand on top of the MOT Hardcore and compact the the Sharp Sand layer too.
Bedding layer and sub base should be a consistent thickness across the area to avoid differential settlement.
Please note that the calculator above is an estimate, due to the products being locally sourced and natural – quantities required can differ due to some quarries producing stone softer or harder than the next, once compacted the results can vary a lot.
Sharp Sand is sourced locally nationwide dependent on delivery area, therefore colour, type and consistency may vary, but all sand provided will perform the same applications as each other.
